Leadership and serviceSunday's Gospel reading On this election weekend, the Gospel reading this Sunday happens to be about the nature of true leadership. Brothers James and John approach Jesus demanding that they be his chief disciples, one on his right hand and the other on his left. Jesus is patient in his response; clearly, they do not know what they are asking for. While the search for glory or greatness can be admirable, the true mark of a leader is to have the humility to be a servant. "Whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." Jesus' model of leadership was one of profound selflessness and self-giving. May our leaders take this to heart, and may each of us strive to live by this standard.
