Blind Bartimaeus"Teacher, let me see again." A few weeks ago we heard the story of the rich man who asked Jesus what he needed to do to inherit eternal life - a particularly rich reward for following all the commandments. Unfortunately, he could not bear to give up his many possessions. His wealth and sense of entitlement kept him from following Jesus. The story of Bartimaeus is an interesting contrast. Not only is Bartimaeus blind, he is also desperately poor. When he hears that Jesus is near, he shouts to be heard. Despite the crowd shushing him, he persists. When he is told that Jesus is calling for him, he throws off his cloak, springs up and rushes to Jesus. Here is a man with literally nothing to loose and everything to gain. Jesus says, "What do you want me to do for you?" and he responds, "My teacher, let me see again." The story continues, "Jesus said to him, 'Go; your faith has made you well.' Immediately, he regained his sight and followed him on the way." Bartimaeus had the courage to ask for exactly what he needed to be whole. He had the courage of his conviction and faith that Jesus could help. His gratitude then led him to follow Jesus. Entitlement verses gratitude. How often do we let our sense of entitlement interfere with following Jesus? How often do we live out our faith as an expression of our gratitude?
