REST Refugee update
Sarah has arrived from Lebanon! She is a wonderful young woman who is full of energy and eager to move on with her new life in Canada. She is extremely grateful for everyone who has supported her to get to Canada. We are now working through the regular medical and dental appointments and finding out what might be available for English classes. Her English is quite good, but her hopes and dreams are big, so she will need to perfect her English :) We had a welcome lunch for her at St. Agnes and she loved it, as the photo shows. If there is anyone who would love to ride around on transit with her, to show her all the modes available to her, that would be great. Otherwise, she will learn them bit by bit. Chance, Lidine and Julie: Still in Uganda, but they have now had their interviews- Yahoo! A big step forward. Hopefully they will have medical checks done soon so that they can travel and meet us all. Shiba's family from Afghanistan: This is a sponsorship that is shared with a group called JEAM at Christ Church Cathedral. There are 9 people in the sponsored family, plus their oldest daughter Shiba, who is already here and studying to be a psychiatric nurse. One brother, Nawab, has arrived. The rest of the family members have had their travel delayed. Most of them were scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, but the chartered flight was delayed. There seems to be a lot of difficulty getting exit permits from Pakistan. Hopefully, the flight will be rescheduled soon. Shiba has found a house for them in Maple Ridge. Too bad it is so far away, but they will be safe and it is a very nice house for them. We are looking for single beds (5), dressers, end tables, any carpets or living room chairs, lamps. If anyone has any of these items, please let me know and we will figure out a way to get them to the new house. Also, if anyone has a bike in good condition, that would be great. Any size will be good, except those for very tall people. The youngest boy is 7 and the oldest is 22. Shannon Muir, smuirslp@gmail.com |
