Choosing a 'good name'
I began my ordained ministry as the Deacon-in-charge of the Church of Cleopas in Kamloops on September 7, 1997, some 21 years ago. The readings for that Sunday were the same as the ones we will have this Sunday (see the link below). The deaths of Lady Diana (on August 31) and Mother Theresa (on September 5) dominated the news that weekend. The reading from Proverbs included these lines: "A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold. The rich and the poor have this in common: the Lord is the maker of them all." Proverbs 22:1-2. What struck me then was the resonance of the second line - that although Diana was wealthy and Theresa quite poor, they were made by the same God. What strikes me now is the first line about "a good name." Twenty-one years later, both Diana and Theresa's 'good names' live on for the generosity of spirit they demonstrated with their lives. A question to ponder: In the choices I make in life, do I strive for 'great riches' or a 'good name?'
Hope to see you on Sunday! Stephen+
