"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me"Luke 4:14-21 When I was a teenager I spent several summers at Sorrento Centre as a member of the youth staff. It was a great and formative experience for me. Music was (and still is) a big part of the Sorrento summer experience, with lots of lively music used in the outdoor chapel for daily services. One of the most popular songs of that era was "The Spirit of the Lord is Upon Me" by Jim Strathdee. It always comes to mind when I read this passage: When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, ‘Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’ (NRSV) It is a rather audacious thing for Jesus to do! As the story continues, he is not receieved well. Indeed, he has to relocate to Capernaum as his home base. But this is how Luke describes Jesus' first public act after his baptism and wilderness experience. It is an auspicious beginning to his ministry. The passage from Isaiah becomes for Jesus his mission statement and sets the stage for everything that is to come. Questions to ponder: What does this 'mission statement' from Isaiah tells us about Jesus' ministry? How might we, as followers of Jesus, participate in his mission? For more infomation visit:

Pet Blessing serviceSunday, February 3, 2019 at 10:15 AM Many churches like to celebrate St Francis Day in October with a pet blessing ceremony. We determined, after hours of scholarly research, that St Francis Day is a 'movable feast,' and so we moved it to the first Sunday in February. Bring your household animal - dog, cat, bird, turtle, or hamster! Dogs come on leashes and other animals in their cages. There will be water and treats for the animals. For more infomation visit:
